How is overtime pay calculated?

How we worked it out

  1. 11 + 11 + 11 + 11 + 6 + 0 + 0 = 50 h this week
  2. 40 h × $20.00 = $800.00 (first 40 h)
  3. 10 h × $20.00 × 1.5 = $300.00 (over 40 h)
  4. $800.00 + $300.00 = $1,100.00 before tax

Daily overtime by state

California, Alaska and Nevada add overtime after 8 hours in a workday, and Colorado after 12. Nevada's daily rule covers only workers paid under $18.00 an hour. For any other state, this page applies the federal rule and doesn't include that state's own rules.

Of these states, only California requires double time: after 12 hours in a workday, and after 8 hours on the seventh day in a row.

Which breaks count as hours worked

Short rest breaks, from 5 to about 20 minutes, count as hours worked. A meal break of usually 30 minutes or more, when you're fully off duty, doesn't count toward the 40 hours.

Method and sources

Each calculator applies the published federal or state rule to the hours and pay you enter and rounds each amount to the nearest cent. Every step is shown, and every rule links to its official page with the date we checked it. Not legal or tax advice; the pages never decide whether you're exempt. Spot something wrong? Tell us and we will fix it and note the change.

  • One job, paid by the hour at one rate. Bonuses and other pay that can raise your regular rate aren't included.
  • The days are one workweek, in the order your employer's workweek starts.
  • Each amount of pay is rounded to the cent; half a cent rounds up.
  • This page doesn't decide whether you're exempt from overtime.
